Diesel exhaust exposure presents an inhalation health hazard to workers and is classified as a Group 1 carcinogenic to humans by IRAC. An effective strategy for reducing worker exposure to DEE/DPM is installing cleaner-burning or low-emission diesel engines.

WHAT ABOUT DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTERS (DPF’s)
- Maintenance Intensive-DPF’s are maintenance intensive, as DPM that has been deposited in the filter must be burnt off regularly, requiring a coordinated team effort along with investment to keep them performing optimally.
- Ventilation Burdens-The burn-off process in a DPF requires it to operate at high temperatures for extended periods, which requires additional air, and ventilation volumes need to be increased to handle new sources of heat and to dilute emissions.
- High Costs-A vehicle’s duty-cycle does not always allow the engine to run hot enough to reach the required burn-off temperature, and though ‘active DPF’s assist with generating the required heat, they have a high cost to implement.
